Practice makes . . .

Finish this phrase:  “Practice makes __________________.”

How many of you said “Practice makes Perfect?” That’s what I used to think. Today let’s set the record straight and talk about how this new idea can help you find a more peaceful life.

There are so many benefits to a more peaceful life. We are able to sleep better, wake up feeling refreshed, focus and concentrate easier, and be more productive in our daily life. These are just a few of the amazing benefits. So what does any of this have to do with practice?

Practice Makes Perfect!

Like I said, I used to think that, but then a very wise music teacher corrected me one day. I was a preteen at my weekly violin lesson, and my teacher asked me, “How do you get to Carnegie Hall?” (Now keep in mind, I was at that age where I thought I knew everything, and that everyone should be amazed by how amazing I was.) My reply, of course was, “Practice, Practice, Practice” Then, being the smarty I was, added, “Practice makes Perfect!”

Not Necessarily –

My astute teacher immediately corrected me and said, “no – Practice makes Permanent.” He went on to explain that if you want to be a really good musician, you have to practice correctly and work on improving every day. If you have a sloppy practice, or settle to stay the same, all the practice in the world will never make you perfect. I must admit, even at that age, I was humbled by his wisdom. He helped me to improve every time we met, until one day he told me it was time to find someone who could take me to the next level. I owe a lot to that great teacher who taught me more than just how to play the violin. Let me share another valuable lesson with you.

What does that have to do with a More Peaceful Life?

Since that eye opening day, I have applied that reasoning to every area of my life. In my previous career, I wanted to be the best so I worked hard to learn and practice the correct way to do my job, improve my job skills, and be recognized as an expert in my field. The hard work and diligence paid off. I became the first woman in our company to hold the position of plant manager of a medium size industrial plant.

In my personal life, I wanted to be able to be the best mom I could be, so I learned what I could from other moms, read books, took classes, prayed a lot, and through the grace of God, I have two wonderful grown sons. Despite being raised by a single mom during some extremely difficult times, they are both well educated and successful in their jobs.

In my spiritual life, I found like-minded people from whom I could learn, and people who would challenge me to be the best I could be, and challenge me to pursue the truth. I took as many classes as I could, and eventually began teaching my own classes.

My life became more peaceful, my health improved, and so did my relationships and my finances. You will find that when you are more peaceful on the inside, more peace comes to you from the outside. Life improves over all.

Above all else Stay Positive.

Here is the most important thing I learned along the way: In all areas of my life, I learned to practice positivity. I practiced it consistently, staying positive as much as I possibly could – whether the days were good, bad, or ugly. Staying positive was the common thread that kept me grounded, helped me stay balanced, and helped me see the best in all circumstances.

We’ll talk about positivity tools another time, but one you can start today is to treat yourself well. Avoid negative self talk. Believe in yourself. You have unique abilities that no one else can touch. You were created for a purpose, and you are the best suited to carry it out. Practice being positive with yourself so that it becomes permanent in every area of your life.

What are You Practicing Today?

Keeping in mind that practice makes permanent, what are you practicing? Are you able to see the best in all circumstances? Do you feel grounded?

It’s been a challenging year for many of us, and it may be difficult to find the positive things in life. Don’t give up, and don’t be embarrassed to ask for help.
