If you want to have a more peaceful life, it is important that you discover, understand, and live out your life’s purpose. Without a true sense of purpose you may feel like you’re just going from one day to the next, without really loving or hating it. You may find yourself mindlessly going through the motions from one thing to another, feeling numb to the world around you. If you’re in this situation, boredom is your major enemy and you need to stop it in its tracks.
Avoiding Boredom
We all experience boredom at some point in life, and it is natural. However, perpetual boredom stops us from reaching our full potential. If you want to get out of this rut and onto the fast track to finding your purpose, living it out, and achieving success and fulfillment, you’re going to have to give up boredom. It’s time to say you’ll never be bored again!
The Unengaged Mind, published in September, 2012’s Perspections on Psychological Science, defines boredom as the inability to stay attentive in three ways — by failing to engage with internal and external stimuli, by becoming obsessed with the idea of being bored, and by blaming our boredom on our surroundings. But boredom is more than an unpleasant feeling — studies show that it can lead to some negative health consequences . Boredom is detrimental to your physical and mental health.
Boredom can lead to increased body weight issues. Emotional eating (and drinking) are often triggered by boredom. Boredom has been shown to aggravate physical pain. It makes you feel unfulfilled, unhappy, and tired. Motivation to be active goes away and inactivity takes over. It’s a fact – inactivity leads to more inactivity, plus it leaves you feeling empty and miserable. The cycle becomes ongoing, and you’ve got to consciously break its path. The list goes on and on.
Even though you really don’t want to do anything, to break that vicious cycle you have to do something – anything! It doesn’t matter what, so long as it is something positive. Just get moving. If you don’t like your chosen activity, change to something else. You have the power to choose.
You May be Attracting Boredom
You may not even realize it, but you might be inviting boredom into your life. It’s easy to do – especially when we have routine tasks we do every day, that we can do without even thinking about what comes next.
What we think about the most is what we tend to become. Consider your typical day. Do you find yourself saying things like, “I’m so bored,” or “I can’t wait until this is over?” If so, you may be inviting more boredom into your life. Instead, try to find a way to make the task at hand more interesting. Can you make a game out of it? Get creative – use your imagination. You may even find yourself surprised by how quickly you accomplish what used to keep you from moving forward. Tell yourself how much you are enjoying what you are doing Watch what happens.
Boredom and Purpose
How does boredom relate to finding your purpose? It’s simple. If you’re allowing yourself to be bored, you’re putting roadblocks in the way of finding the path that will lead you to your purpose. Life becomes more and more mundane.
It’s important to have a purpose, because that purpose will allow you to feel happy and give you a reason to get out of bed every day. It will keep you moving, active, and healthy. It will give you that feeling of accomplishment, that knowledge that you are here on earth for a reason and you are doing your part to improve the world.
Your purpose doesn’t necessarily have to be a career – in fact most people find it has very little to do with their job status or occupation. Your purpose is something more personal; it could even be a hobby, a mission, or a charitable cause.
It’s also important to love what you’re doing. The ideal, of course, is to turn your life’s purpose into a full time career. No matter what you’re doing, if you don’t love it, you need to find something else to pursue. You do have to survive, though, so it’s important to plan for change.
Some people are able to pursue their passion during the time when they’re not working, because some passions may not make the best careers. That’s okay, too. Follow your heart, and one day you may find an opportunity to devote yourself full time to do what you love.
How do You Find Purpose?
How can you discover your purpose? The answer is simple, but the process might be a tough one. You need to open yourself to all new experiences and get out there and do things. You mustn’t allow yourself to say you’re bored anymore!
Exploring the world around you is a great way to discover your purpose or passion. It’s also a great way to find out what you don’t want to do. There are no limits here.
Whether you’re reading new books, exploring parts of your city you’ve never been to, or talking to people you’ve never met, you’ll discover new things about yourself, learn more about your surroundings, and experience new adventures.
New experiences have a lot to offer. They get you out of the same old mindset and into one where you have more passion and interest in the world. New encounters encourage you to try new things, develop new skill sets, and find out what you excel at.
You can find purpose in the strangest places, so don’t rule out any activity. After all, if you try something and don’t like it, you don’t have to go back to it.
It’s Finally Time!
It’s having passions, and the perseverance to pursue them, that makes us stars. If you’ve been feeling like your life is empty, it’s time to find that purpose and live your life.
Find your purpose – find your joy!
